There are two things to remember when you are looking to buy dolls online - firstly, there's a difference between buying antique dolls and modern dolls online.

Modern dolls such as the the Barbie collection can be easily purchased online and generally are pretty durable to be sent through postal or direct delivery means. On the other hand, antique dolls can be a bit of a challenge if you're buying them online especially as they compass a long history and different types have there own uniqueness especially in the clothing department.

In recent years, buying dolls online over platforms such as Ebay has become extremely popular and the great thing to keep in mind is that while pricing will determine overall purchase, buying online has some big advantages than going to a physical outlet and making a purchase. The emphasis is on deals and dolls deals online are big business. More importantly, you as the buyer can be in a strong position to grab a great deal especially if you're following auctions.

There are basically two types of doll enthusiasts - those who revel in the enjoyment of enjoying eras gone by with antique doll collecting and those who are more modern orientated or people buying for kids.

Buying Antique Dolls Tips

Here's a few things to keep in mind when buying an antique doll. These tips can save you a lot of frustration.

#1. Because they are older there is always a concern that they may be hiding some issues. Things to look for include cracks which can put a dampener on your purchase. Especially look for hairline cracks.

#2. If you are buying the doll physically then ask that you can remove things like the hair so you can check beneath. Always remove the body or ask the seller to do it for you. This only makes sense because when you're looking at shelling out hundreds of dollars you want to make sure your purchase isn't flawed.

#3. Make sure the doll is original if that's what it has been advertised as. This can be difficult to check online and that's why buying through platforms such as Ebay are great in that you are protected in many areas from purchasing a dud.

#4. Also, buying the complete original doll and by complete we mean it has it's original clothing intact can be important. It depends how badly you want it but inexperienced collectors should be aware that replacing parts and clothing can be expensive. It's almost like buying new parts for a motor vehicle - they always seem to be priced over the top.

Collecting antique bisque dolls is a hobby some people engage in. Bisque dolls are commonly referred to as as porcelain dolls. Up to the 1860s, dolls were made from porcelain. These were glazed and looked like china.

The truth is they are different from porcelain dolls. They were first made with leather for its clothing as well as the bodies. Nowadays, these dolls are very expensive and breakable. They are rarely manufactured for playing. These are for collectibles only.

To elaborate, bisque is porcelain that is not glazed whereas porcelain is a result of paste from a mixture of water and clay. However the process of molding for bisque dolls and antique porcelain dolls are pretty much the same.

The application of the color creates a skin tone that is realistic, as if it is really human. If no color is added to antique bisque dolls, then these are called parian dolls.

The production of these dolls were circa 1860s in France. A lot of doll factories made unglazed porcelain dolls and they were the first to do. It gained popularity and the factories were able to obtain the right material to make doll heads circa early 1900s.

The composition of these replaced bisque as the material that was used for the dolls. But since antique bisque dolls have such a history on dolls in general, contemporary collectors continue to collect these.

The sizes and characteristics vary. If the heads of the dolls are made from bisque, then these are considered to be antique bisque dolls. But because of the weight of the material, most dolls are not completely from bisque.

If so, they wouldn't just be heavy, they would also be fragile. The smaller ones were such a hit during the 1800s up til the 1930s. They were called the penny dolls. The sizes range from 1/2 inch up to life size which is around 5 feet tall.

There are companies that continue to produce antique dolls because of the demand. All throughout history, these dolls are still produced. Most factories are located in France (because this is where these dolls started.).

Then manufacturing companies transferred to Germany circa 1880s. In 1900s, there were already manufacturing companies in the United States. In the end of the 20th century, China also has their own factories which manufacture these dolls.

Nearly all the bisque dolls that are created today are made in China, except for those rare antique bisque dolls which most collectors are searching high and low for.

Doll identification: 5 inches, jointed arms & head, big ears, almost like kewpie and elf boy , bisque? antique?

Tufted topknot on head, 2 tufts on back of head, cute smiling face with teeth showing, big eyes with lashes, Beautiful elf-like kewpie like doll? there are some numbers I think on back but can't really make out. I hope you can tell me the name and or maker of this doll.

Could you take a photo and post it with you question it would make it a bit easier to id see if Rose O'Neill the American artist from the 20's who originally designed these dolls and paper dolls. Also the doll should be all bisque, is that true. There was one called Cupid With the tuft's over each ear and one on the top of the head at 5.25 inches also had a sister marked Germany and 10954, this doll was a copy by an artist to sell along with the Rose O'Neill dolls. These dolls in books are referred to as all bisque.

Help with Antique Bru Reproduction?

Just aquired 8 antique dolls including a vintage Madame Alexander and a very unique, beautiful looking doll with tattered, worn clothing. Upon closer inspection I realized that there was a tag attached to her clothing which read “Circle and Dot reproduction BRU doll, the original can be seen at the Dolls in Wonderland Museum in St. Augustine”. I am not too schooled on antique dolls, but this doll looks rather old, yet is in very good condition in spite of her age.

I wanted to know if anyone is familiar with Circle and Dot Reproduction BRU dolls and the value of them?

A few images of this doll:

1. http://bikedominica.com/images/2/bru%20001.jpg
7. http://bikedominica.com/images/2/bru%20007.jpg

reproduction Brus include the Circle Dot Bru (named from the original mold markings which were a circle with a dot in the center

You will find your answer on this list:

The Coca-Cola Company has created some of the classic commercials that chronicle life in the United States. This legacy has allowed the company to attract top artists to work on their advertisements, including Normal Rockwell and Jim Harrison. This resulted in some of the most appealing ads ever created.

These famous artists from every era have created timeless Coke images of refreshment we know and love. Old Coca Cola prints from the National Geographic magazine featured timeless Coca Cola ads on their back covers 7 months of the year since the 1930's. These original Coca Cola magazine ads are beautifully framed works of art you will enjoy for years to come. Each vintage Coca Cola ad comes in beautiful silver frames size 8x10". The condition of the vintage Coke ad is consistent with the age of the magazine. A vintage Coca Cola ad appeared each February, April, June, July, August, October, and the most collectible of all - December with Haddon Sundblom's Santa images for many years.

These nostalgic magazine ads chronicle our times and reflect traditional American images from wartime to work to home. These old National Geographic Covers make great art prints that can be hung on a wall or displayed on a desk. It makes a great gift and will stand out among all of a room's decor.

Unique, old Coca Cola memorabilia is also extremely popular with Coke collectors. They love the wide array of soft drink collectibles bearing the Coca Cola name in its famous script. They can choose among 1950s souvenir items, soda parlor signs, platters, timepieces, lamps, wall decorations, distinctive Coke glasses, dinner plates, home furnishings, and beverage coolers. There is something for everyone.

Many people enjoy the toys and games produced in conjunction with the soda company over the last hundred years. Children, parent and grandparents all played with one variety of coke toy or another. You might be able to locate a teddy bear, game, puzzle, metal replica vehicle or other memento from the past. Such nostalgia is fun for the whole family.

These Coca Cola products make great year-round gifts for the collector on your list.

What is the name of a range of collectible plastic bears made by Russ?

They are from the 90's, about 5-6" tall standing upright with movable arms, legs and head.

They were dressed in different outfits such as santa, musketeer, ballerina, little bo peep, aladdin etc.

They were quite collectible at the time but I don't think they exist anymore, I have about 15 of them that I'm trying to sell but I have no idea what they were called.

I was told they could be "Cherish Teddies" but these were made from ceramic, the ones I have are plastic, they have a similar face though.

Japanese porcelain dolls are available in a wide range of sizes, ages, and dress. Although some antique Japanese porcelain dolls are created of fine crushed oyster shells, each one holds a unique and fascinating story.

Japanese Porcelain Doll Styles

Geisha porcelain dolls are typically found in traditional dress and makeup, wearing brightly colored silk kimonos, often with accessories like a traditional fan. Small child porcelain dolls can be found wearing short sets, or more traditional clothing. There are porcelain dolls representing every age, and time period of Japanese history. With the wide variety of Japanese porcelain dolls available, it is impossible to have one of every type. Many Japanese porcelain dolls are completed with real hair to authenticate their look, and provide for a more realistic appearance. The realistic appearance and the attention to detail in the crafting of the Japanese porcelain doll is a tribute to the people of Japan.

Japanese Geisha Porcelain Dolls

The ancient Geisha was known as a performer, an entertainer and was held in very high esteem. She traditionally received many years of training, sometimes beginning at birth. The Geisha porcelain doll is often found posed in a move from one of the traditional dances. Other Japanese porcelain Geisha dolls can be found seated or standing. She demonstrates the grace and beauty of ancient Geisha. The Japanese porcelain Geisha doll often comes with accessories such as a traditional fan, small musical instrument, or flowers to demonstrate the elegance and esteem of these women. The popularity of the Japanese porcelain Geisha doll can also be linked to her colorful dress. The clothing of the Japanese porcelain geisha doll is typically a silk kimono adorned with a floral or dragon print. Her hair and makeup are crafted to complete the look of the traditional Geisha.

Japanese Samurai Porcelain Dolls

The Japanese Samurai also are portrayed as porcelain dolls. This Japanese Samurai porcelain doll is as true to tradition as is the porcelain Geisha. He is dressed in a detailed silk costume, and may come with a range of accessories from a shield for personal protection, to a traditional samurai sword, to protect his family.

Friendship Dolls

In 1929, the United States sent over 12,000 blue eyed dolls to Japan in gesture of good will. These dolls were even sent with a special passport. Japan, in return, sent 58 hand-made Japanese porcelain dolls to the United States. These dolls became known as Friendship dolls. While some of the friendship dolls have been lost over the years, most still exist and can be found on display around the country. The Japanese porcelain doll is collected by adults and children, by boys and girls.

Displaying Japanese Porcelain Dolls

The wealthiest families only display their dolls on festival days. Children are not allowed to touch them, only to look because Japanese porcelain dolls are considered works of art, like a sculpture. Many attribute the Japanese porcelain doll with thoughts and feelings, almost a life of their own. The Japanese porcelain doll is best displayed in a glass case to protect her from dust, dirt, and grime. She needs to have a calm background, such as a piece of brown, black or tan cloth. The Japanese porcelain doll's clothing is very striking and colorful and will stand out to perfection with a calm background. Placing the Japanese porcelain doll on a background busy with other things will diminish the beauty of her traditional dress.

The wide variety of Japanese porcelain dolls available makes any collection incomplete without one. They are made with such a fine attention to detail and come in such a wide variety of shapes and sizes you could collect Japanese porcelain dolls for years and never find the same one twice.

A-Porcelain-Doll.com supplies porcelain dolls, antique dolls, and dolls collectible by everyone to everyone. They specialize in handcrafted porcelain dolls by internationally acclaimed artists from a variety of cultures. You can find Indian dolls, Persian dolls, Japanese dolls, Irish dolls, black dolls, ethnic dolls, and much more at A-Porcelain-Doll.com.

My daughter is looking for a Lolita Doll type dress. Where can we find one other than ebay or Hong Kong?

She needs the dress by 5/15/09. Thanks.

This site has just about every Lolita clothing link possible. I put the page of links where you can order without an ordering service. (Not websites that only ship to Japan.)
http://www.lolitafashion.org/brand_list_intshipping.php

If she are a beginning Lolita, I suggest she buys non brand name when she is still discovering your style. For example, if she want a skirt from the Japanese brand name Angelic Pretty, get a similar one from a less expensive non brand name like La Dauphine.

Making your clothes is another good alternative. I'm low on money, so I make most of my clothes, which works well, actually, because I like coming up with my own designs.

Definitely avoid Ebay if possible! Some things are good, but most are not. Everything I got off there has had something wrong with it. One shop actually just hot glues fabric together!

But not all Hong Kong Lolita clothing is bad. I've heard from many people that Anna House is really nice and inexpensive and I'm ordering a few things from there to try it out myself.

I hope this helps and I wish you the best!

The second largest hobby within the United States is antique doll collecting, which includes porcelain dolls. There are a large variety of antique dolls to choose from and collectors need to learn every bit of vital information available to enable them to build their collections properly.

Porcelain dolls are normally handcrafted from a high quality of porcelain and then are hand painted to express facial features in eloquent poses. Collectors have even collect dream catchers that feature stunning porcelain dolls, which they feel gives them the power to have good dreams. Many dream catchers wear costumes that are made from suede with beads that hand applied and accented with feathers.

Porcelain dolls are so expensive often time due to the popularity of the artist, the quantity that has been produced, and how limited the numbers were. Of course, original artists collectible porcelain dolls are much more valuable than the more mass produced porcelain dolls. These types of collections can be educational as well as exciting, and displaying your collection is an intricate part of the pride of a collector. Locating porcelain dolls from antique stores, flea markets, and garage sales can be quite challenging, but there are a variety of choices to choose from.

Collectors of these beautiful dolls know that they can be quite expensive, however, collectors can purchase porcelain dolls that are rarely found that have been restored. Before purchasing an porcelain doll that has had a restoration done to it be sure that it was done correctly by using original materials and the proper techniques. The fabrics and trims used to restore the porcelain doll should always be representatives from the period that the doll was originally produced, which will help keep its integrity and in determining their value.

During the 1800s, porcelain dolls were produced in Germany, France, and Denmark by hand, but then during the last of the nineteenth century manufactures began mass producing the arms, legs, and heads of these marvelous dolls in Germany. There are two types of porcelain dolls which are china that have a glazed face, and bisque where the skin has a more natural look and has an unglazed finish.

The French introduced the "BeBe" during the middle of the 1800s by Emil Louis Jumeau, which wore clothing that resembled the fashion that was currently being worn by the higher class females of that day. Porcelain dolls that were produced in Germany were not as elegant as their French counterparts, but they were much more popular with the general population because they were much more affordable. Today it is not hard to locate porcelain dolls that resemble babies, youngsters, and adults, which are available in a number of sizes, nationalities, and costumes.

When collectors purchase porcelain dolls today they will find that they are considered to be artistic pieces and they will usually come with a certificate of authenticity and a registration card. Porcelain dolls will be stuffed with cloth that includes a wire type armature to help pose the doll. Some of the dolls have a two piece head with the shoulder plate being constructed to help position the head. The heads, arms, and legs are normally produced from a high fire and high quality porcelain as well.

Who doesn't love a beautiful creamy porcelain faced doll dressed in long flowing dresses of so long ago?

Today the antique dolls available on the market were made by a handful of makers who were from either France or Germany, where the art of doll making was at its peak in the years between 1840 and 1930. During these years there emerged in France a young man by the name of Leon Casimir Bru, the youngest son of a weaver. The young Bru went to work for a dollmaker in Paris... and history began there.

Soon after he began in the work of doll making, Bru opened his own manufacturing company. His first dolls resembled other makers' creations, but his later ones, 1870 and on, carried a signature mark of Bru as he worked to stand out from the many other makers of the time.

Today we have the highly sought after, highly exquisite, highly expensive Bru dolls, a name every collector longs to have in his collection.

Also emerging in France at that time, or sometime before Bru, was Francois Jumeau. He married into the business, marrying the niece of a doll maker. When Jumeau's wife died, he opened his own company, his own porcelain factory, and made the bebe dolls that became so popular in those times and are so popular now... dols that looked like a little girl rather than like an adult woman.

The antique Jumeau today is highly prized for its delicate, exquisite beauty, which was manufactured between the years of 1972 to 1899. In Germany during those years the German makers were just as busy.

They were probably led by J.D. Kestner who was making dolls as early as 1820. By 1860, after Kestner had died and his grandson took over the business. They bought their own porcelain factory to make porcelain heads. They continued to make dolls until 1938.

Armand Marseille was another German maker whose dolls are highly prized by antique collectors today. Marseille was one of the largest and best known porcelain doll head makers. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1856, he emmigrated to Germany with his family ca. 1860 and doll business was going strong by 1886 after he bought a toy factory and a porcelain factory, producing 1000 heads a day from 1900 - 1930.

All types of dolls were made there; bisque child, baby, lady and character dolls with kid leather bodies.

As Marseille worked, so did Heinrich Handwerck, who was beginning his career in 1876. In 1902 Kammer and Reinhardt bought Handwerck out and produced the Handwerck dolls until 1832.

The original dolls by Handwerck were designed by Handwerck but produced by Simon and Halbig and marked by very high quality that continued under Kammer and Reinhardt. Ernst Kammer and Franz Reinhardt founded the Kammer and Reinhardt company in 1886 in Waltershausen, Thuringia, Germany. Designers of their own heads, they had them produced by Simon and Halbig as they did not own a porcelain factory. As stated above, they purchased the Handwerck company and then bought the Simon and Halbig company as well.

Ernst Heubach, the son of a weaver, entered the world of doll making when he married the daughter of Armand Marseille in 1919.

The two companies, Heubach and Marseille, merged and became the United Porcelain Factory of Koppelsdorf, Germany. The companies went their own ways once more in 1939.

The exquisite dolls made so long ago by this handful of French and German doll makers are now searched for by serious collectors of the time. Seeing the beautiful faces with the painted or glass eyes looking straight at you with a sense of wisdom that a doll cannot really have... makes you feel the essence of the doll maker himself has been made a real part of each doll.

Doll collecting has been a favorite hobby of many people for many years. A great American dollmaker has had a great influence on collectors of vintage dolls. Madame Alexander is a great blog which tells of her remarkable accomplishments.

Actually don't. They are probably worth more in their condition. If you do want to restore them, I suggest you have them checked out by a reputable dealer in their present condition.

The original Chatty Cathy dolls were one of the number one selling dolls during its time. The original dolls voice is the voice of creator, Ruth Handler. Ruth Handler and her husband created the dolls. There were also many toys and accessories created.

The number one or prototype Chatty Cathy doll was produced in 1959 and 1960. They had blonde and brunette colored hair styled in a pageboy or bob cut. The speaker was covered with cloth. There are no markings on the back of this first line. The limbs are usually a little more tan in color and the vinyl is just a bit thicker than the later models. Very rare in this first line is brown eyes. There were not a lot of the brown-eyed dolls made in this first line. If you find one with brown eyes, you have found a rare first edition Chatty Kathy doll.

The first line of dolls ALL had soft faces and they ALL said 11 different phrases. This first line is referred to as the “Classic” Chatty Cathy because they were the first ever produced. The year of 1959 is referred to as the “prototype” year. These are the Chatty Cathy dolls that are the most sought after. One in mint condition is worth hundreds of dollars and more in the re-sell doll market. It is times like these; I really wish I had my original Chatty Cathy doll. However, I would not sell her. Unfortunately, she was misplaced in all my childhood moves. I lost her. I just could never find her. I personally believe my mother gave her away to someone. And I do believe she had the brown eyes.

I have such a wonderful and vivid memory of receiving my first Chatty Cathy. I was born in the year of 1956. I could not have been over five years old when I began desiring her, so they were probably in existence about two years. I recall having a nice chat with my father while resting comfortably on his arm. Actually we were talking about how much God loves everybody and that included me of course. Out of curiosity I suddenly wondered if God would buy the Chatty Cathy doll for me I saw recently at the local Dimeco Variety Store I visited with my grandmother. She stood out from all the rest of the toys on the very top shelf. I could not stop looking at her, she looked so beautiful, and somehow I was even aware this particular doll could talk!

When I asked the question, dad just laughed and laughed, and replied: “you really should not ask God for material things such as a doll, but I promise you a special trip to the Dimeco Variety Store, and I will purchase the doll.” “Oh my gosh,” I said! I was so excited.

I could wait to get to the Dimeco Variety Store. When we arrived at the store, I lead my father straight to where she stood high on the top shelf and pointed at her. Now we had to get a clerk to help us get her down. FinallyÂ…..the clerk arrived (I was just so excited to get her down from there and into my possession, I could not stand still) with a ladder and even some other device she grabbed hold of Chatty Cathy and carefully brought her down to hold her.

The clerk climbed down from the ladder and handed me my first baby doll, which was one of the original Chatty Cathy dolls. I cannot tell you how delighted I was with her that day. I do not remember another event other than how happy dad was also to see how much I loved that doll and how happy it made me when he purchased her for me. I thanked him for his gift over and over again. We were both so happy that day. Secretly, I also thanked God for my gift of the Chatty Cathy doll. I was certain God helped make the arrangements as well.

Chatty Cathy had a string with a little round ring at the end. When you pulled the string, she would happily say all kinds of things to me (I thought she was saying them directly to me).

The Chatty Cathy doll was definitely a popular vintage doll created by Ruth Handler first in the year of 1959. Thereafter were different types and models. If one thought of them as being an educational toy, the educational benefits would probably be “how to nurture a child.” Owners were parents. The dolls were as their children. The Chatty Cathy dolls could also help a child develop vocabulary. I developed a special nick-name of “Chatterbox.”

I was talking to my aunt about a doll that was given to me by my grandmother. How can I find out about it?

She was very very surprised i had it and told me that i could have an antique and that if it was porcelin it would have a year or something on the neck or head. I found it but can barely make out what it says. In fact i dont know what it says. Looks like a year and some name, i cant tell. Where can i go to find out more about it. I thought when i got it, "what the heck and am i going to do with this" but now im curious since everyone is making a fuss about it. Its a life size infant.. like a 10 lb baby. Its portrayed as a sleeping infant on its belly. I cant find this anywhere as to where its from or anything on the net. Its arms, legs, and head are all porcelin. She said it could have come from Switzerland cause my grandfather visited. Anyway, could someone tell me anything or where i could look to find answers?

HI Squirrel,

Well, I only have a couple of suggestions. You might go to the library and look for books about antique dolls. I know there are books about dolls from all over the world and you might just find it in there.

Another suggestion, there are millions of people here on Yahoo Answers... you might take several pictures of the doll, showing the face, front and back body.. and add a link to your question of "Help! Does Anyone know about this antique doll?" Put your question in Games & Recreation>Toys. This way, people that collect dolls can actually see the doll and if they recognize it can give you an answer... AND.. these questions are seen all over the world... Surely someone will know about your doll.

Also.... you will be taking digital pictures and then loading them to a photo site like flickr..... so do some homework on how to sign up for Flickr.com or Photobucket... I don't think it is hard. The important thing you will be doing is finding out about your doll.

Good luck.

The collection of antiques has been one of the best loved hobbies for many years. There are so many different antique items that can be found today, that people can easily begin a collection of almost anything they could ever imagine. Some may prefer antique furniture, some like to collect baseball cards from decades ago, and some collectors even make a hobby out of collecting old beer cans or wine bottles. The possibilities are basically endless when it comes to collecting antiques.

Another popular item that people love to collect is antique coins and money. This type of collection can be one of the most valuable to own. A coin from the early 1700's may now be worth thousands more than its original monetary value. Paper money is also a favorite antique to collect. In fact, the world's oldest paper money on record dates back to the late 1300s! That particular antique probably could never be bought now by anyone.

Many avid antique collectors also love collecting old gold or silver dining pieces, such as flatware or tea sets. A solid gold or silver tea set from the 1800s would be valued at thousands of dollars or more today. These antiques are favored because they normally retain their excellent condition for years and years. While silver was used more frequently in the past, there are still a few rare solid gold pieces that can be found in shops that specialize in antiques.

One of the best loved antique collections of many female collectors is collecting porcelain dolls from the past. These antiques can also be very valuable depending upon the date the dolls were first manufactured and how well they have been kept in their original condition. A doll that cost only a few dollars in the early 1900s may very well be valued up into hundreds of dollars today.

Antique furniture is also a very popular item for collectors. These antiques can be found rather easily at some pawn shops, antique auctions, and used furniture stores. The better the condition the furniture is in, the more valuable it is considered to be. If it still retains an excellent original finish, this type of antique can be extremely valuable. These antiques may include beds, dressers, an antique wardrobe, couches, chairs, or nearly any antique furniture that was on the market many years ago.

Probably one of the most expensive collections of antiques that a person can get into collecting is that of antique cars. A car that may have been bought new for $100 in 1925 can now be valued up into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Depending upon the make, model, and condition of the car, it may be valued at even more. While antique car collectors may not own as many antiques as those who collect smaller, less expensive antiques, they do own some of the most valuable collections that can be found.

It is clearly obvious that collecting antiques can be one of the most enjoyable, interesting hobbies to have. At times, it may even be quite expensive, depending upon what type of antiques a person prefers to collect. But, this is a way of holding on to a piece of history. Many avid collectors feel this is a treasure that you cannot put a price tag on.

Here is a really good place for antique furniture (and specifically stuff like an antique wardrobe): http://www.beauchampantiques.com/searchresults.php?category=Furniture&medium=Armoires.

I found some antique plastic dolls which are dress in clothes of the world....any idea who makes them?

The dolls are about 7" and are plastic....there are no marks anywhere on the bodies or head.

Madame Alexander? They all have a similar shaped faces so seeing one should let you know if that is what it is (skin tones and hair varied for the nationalities).
