Following the success of the Strawberry Shortcake product line they had designed, in 1981 American Greetings Card Company released a new series that starred the Care Bears. The Care Bears began as a series of greeting cards that had been drawn by childrenÂ’s illustrator Elena Kucharik. Two years later, after the greeting card series was in full swing, Kenner released the Care Bear Teddy Bear line.

Each Care Bear was a uniquely colored teddy bear with a white patch on their stomach that had a specialized insignia on its belly. For example, Good Luck Bear had a shamrock, Bed Time Bear had a crescent moon, and Grumpy Bear had a rain cloud. After the release, the Care Bears were seen in their own television series and had three full-length movies. In addition, they spawned a second set of stuffed animal toys, that were called Care Bear Cousins. Animals like lions, monkeys, elephants, penguins and raccoons were designed in the same style of the care bear teddy bears. The Bears live in a land called the Kingdom of Care-A-Lot where they fight negativity and sadness with a special super-hero like move they called the Care Bear Stare. The Care Bear Stare occurs when the Care Bears stand together and radiate light from their respective tummy symbols, combining to form a ray of love and cheer which is supposed to be strong enough to bring joy and care into even the darkest heart. Kid specific records, books, board games and video games soon followed.

Now, 25 years after their initial release, Care Bears are still being marketed and kids still love them all over the world. As a mindfulness trainer, I'm a big fan of promoting greater mindfulness in the classroom. However, it's interesting to me that those who seem to be the most thoughtful and passionate proponents of mindfulness in education are the ones most likely to be trapped by their limited thinking.

Now, don't get me wrong.

I praise those who introduce silence, stillness and contemplation among students. I applaud those who explain the concept of mindfulness and invite their charges to explore the wonder of watching the mind in action. I celebrate the teachers who use "mindfulness" as an everyday word in their lessons.

But why stop there?

In the name of recess, field trips, and all that kids hold holy in school, can't we make mindfulness FUN?

By using bells to signal silence and having kids close their eyes in order to be mindful, we're sticking to the tried-and-true meditation model.

Must we?

Could kids settle peacefully in their chairs at the sound of a kazoo? Would they benefit from an eyes-wide-open approach to mindfulness that allows them to be active? Can they develop heightened awareness and concentration while playing--with words, music, numbers, colors, shapes, textures and smells?

We learn best when we're enjoying the process. Teaching kids to meditate? Great. But we are unnecessarily limiting the possibilities for greater awareness by preaching--er, teaching--that meditation is the only path to paying attention.

Kids--like the rest of us--want shortcuts. They love games. They remember the things that make them laugh. They pay attention to processes that allow them to be their natural creative selves. Kids see oddball connections and they are extremely resourceful when it comes to playing with even the most mundane objects and concepts.

So, let's let them play. Something tells me they'd approach this differently if it were up to them.

I encourage teachers to include mindfulness training in the classroom, but I urge them to release their attachment to the notion that it has to be done so SERIOUSLY.

Lighten up.

Mindfulness is about noticing new things, drawing distinctions, shifting perspectives, and staying fully present. It is the very essence of having fun.

The truth is that it's impossible to have fun UNLESS you're fully present. So, it seems to me that kids already have an innate tendency to be mindful.

With a little guidance, plenty of humor, and a blast of creativity, good teachers can become great mindfulness trainers.

As long as they're having FUN.

I am looking for a movie, or possibly TV Movie, that I watched many years ago. All I remember is that a boy had a Teddy Bear that was cursed with black magic. And then at one point in the movie the boy and his mother are hiding in the bedroom because objects around the house have come to life. Does anyone know what this movie is called?

Most of us who turn wood come from a woodworking background in flat work. The wood lathe opens up a new world of woodworking with new tools that have their own learning curve and the preferred way to learn is to turn simple projects. A file handle meets the basic criteria of a woodturning project for learning purposes in being inexpensive, entertaining, and useful as a finished item as well as teaching important skills in basic woodturning.

All that is needed for a file handle is a square of wood and, if desired, a scrap piece of copper pipe for a ferrule. The tools that are used are the roughing gouge to reduce the wood square to round; a parting tool to determine the finished diameters, reduce the ferrule section and part off the handle; and a spindle gouge to leave a finger groove for comfort.

A trip to the woodpile should give a suitable piece of wood for the handle. In fact, since a square of about 1 1/4" will be sufficient, a piece of ash or maple will likely supply three or four appropriate blocks. Just a few minutes at the band saw or other cutting station and the wood should be ready to go.

Mark the centres on each end mount the wood between spur center at the head stock of the wood lathe and the tail stock at the other end. Make sure the wood will clear the tool rest before turning on the lathe. There will be some discussion among wood turners as to what the appropriate speed should be, but basically the speed with which you are comfortable is a good one to use. For things this size 1200 rpm is likely good to start.

The roughing gouge is used to turn the wood to a rough cylinder. In conjunction with a measuring gauge, the parting tool is used to determine the final diameters of the butt end, hand grip, finger grip, and ferrule. Either the roughing gouge or the spindle gouge can be used to cut to the final surface but the spindle gouges will generally give a smoother texture and can be used for all the shaping or for the final cut before sanding.

The finger section gives a comfortable feel to the tool and is coved with the spindle gouge. This is the section that really emphasizes cutting with the grain and is a valuable learning place for new wood turners. Similarly the ferrule section needs precise cutting with the parting tool to precisely fit the pipe section. After a quick sanding and finish on the lathe with a bit of shellac, if desired, it can then be parted off and another one mounted.

One of the delights of a woodturning project like this is giving it away to a woodworking friend. Most commercial file handles are miserable to use and a poor fit to most hands so this is a welcome addition to any woodworker's tool kit. Also, the gratitude is usually more than sufficient to inspire the next one and the one after that. After all, in woodturning as in most other things, practise makes perfect, or at least close.

I have a 1992 Steiff teddy bear and I want to sell him. How much and where is best to sell?

He is jointed and he growls. He has never been played with, just put in a cupboard. He is quite large about 22 inches. Is ebay the best option? Is he worth a lot of money?

how do i get mildew out of vintage baby clothes?

my (adult) son's baby clothes have been packed away for many, many years. I want to give his christening blanket to him when his daughter is born. But now I find that some of them have mildew stains on them. How do I get them out and refresh the material?

Hi I restore antique clothing. Let me tell you what I do in these cases.

First put the items in the freezer. The freezer will kill the mold. Brush away what you can using a mushroom brush or a baby brush and dawn dish detergent.

Then soak them overnight in hot water and a combination of vinegar (white distilled) and baking soda (1 cup vinegar 1/4 cup baking soda and a bit of Dawn) to a bucket or sink full.

If there are still remaining spots on white items you can use peroxide and baking soda in a paste but watch the spot carefully and rinse it when the stain lifts.

If the spots remain on colored items repeat the overnight soak.

If the items are yellowed there is a product called Yellow Out that works very well.

When you have restored the items wash them as normal add double fabric softener to the rinse as it fills. Use Bluing in the rinse if you can find it.

One of the subtle differences of trading Contracts for Difference (CFDs) compared to trading the stock market is the fact that CFD brokers charge CFD finance when holding positions overnight. Today we will take a look at this subtle difference of CFD finance and how that may affect your CFD trading business.

The CFD brokers major source of income

You may or may not know that CFD brokers have significant amounts of money under management and it would not be uncommon for a large CFD broker to have in excess of $100 million in client's funds in the bank. These clients' funds sitting in the bank represent an amazing amount of passive income for the CFD broker and at this stage we haven't even talked about CFD finance.

So what exactly is CFD finance?

The CFD finance is a debit or credit to your account as a result of holding a CFD position overnight. Overnight simply means you hold your position past 5 PM New York time which equates to about 7 AM Australian time. This is known as the roll over time.

In effect the CFD finance is a cost you incur for borrowing the leveraged money that you are trading with in the market. As you would already know, one of the greatest benefits of trading CFDs is the ability to put a small amount of margin upfront in order to control a much larger position. For example $500 will control a $10,000 position in one of the top 20 ASX stocks.

You get credited or debited on the full amount

Traders new to CFDs often get confused with the amount the finance is charged on. Most CFD brokers charge finance on your full CFD position irrespective of the amount of margin you put up front. Having said that it is always important to check your CFD brokers product disclosure statement to ensure that is the case.

So in effect you are borrowing the full amount of your CFD position and as a result you incur a financing charge. This charge or credit is normally the overnight financing rate plus or minus 2%. This is a yearly rate which is then calculated back to a daily rate.

As of January 2009 the RBA rate in Australia is 4.25% so if you held a CFD position long you would be charged 4.25% +2% per year calculated back at a daily rate. So we are talking 6.25% per year and only if you hold the position overnight. If you happen to hold your position during the day and closed before 5 PM New York time then you will not be charged overnight financing allowing you to effectively borrows much money as you like for no charge.

Another way to think about it is if you held your CFD position for a full year then you would need to make a 6.25% capital gain just to break even with your CFD finance.

Do I get paid when I short sell a CFD?

Another great advantage of trading CFDs is the fact that when you are short you actually get paid interest every day you hold the position overnight. Normally the rate you would earn is the overnight cash rate -2% calculated as a daily rate. As you can see that doesn't equate to a massive amount of money but it is still a credit nonetheless.

Consider the cost of incurring CFD finance as the cost of accessing more opportunity than what would be available if you were trading the stock market.

How can I remove ink from a mohair teddy bear?

You might *carefully* try removing it with rubbing alcohol and a small paintbrush. The reason hairspray works is because of the alcohol in it. Does anyone know where you can take a toy/doll/bear to be fixed? are there such things as toy repair places?

I have a bear,, specifically a Chantilly Lane bear that sings, my daughter is obsessed with it, and she dropped it and now it's mouth doesn't move, although it still sings. She is devastated and I am trying to see if there is a place i could take it to to get fixed? Are there toy repair shops i can try bringing the bear to? I really hope it can get fixed because i offered getting her a new one and she wont have it, and i cant fool her cause her bear she has now is white but dirty from use, and if i got a new one she would notice how white the new one is. please help
